Push notifications

Get a notification on your phone or computer when something needs you, and open the exact place in kanman with one tap.

kanman can tell you on your phone or computer when something needs you, even when kanman is closed. Tapping a notification opens the exact place it is about: the message in its chat (for a question, the message that asked it), the story. Notifications are short, in your language, and never contain code or secrets.

Turn them on

kanman offers notifications once, at a moment where they help: the first time something waits for you in your conversation, a card under the newest message asks Want me to tell you when something needs you? Tap Turn on and confirm in the dialog of your browser. Not now puts the card away for two weeks.

You can turn them on at any time yourself:

  1. Click your avatar at the top right and choose Your settings.
  2. Open Notifications (/account/notifications).
  3. Under Push notifications, tap Turn on next to This device.

Notifications are set per device. Turn them on on each phone or computer where you want them. Your devices lists every device that gets notifications and when it was last used; remove a device you no longer use (a lost phone) with its X button; kanman asks first. Send a test notification sends one to all your devices right away, so you can check that they arrive and that a tap opens kanman.

iPhone and iPad

Apple delivers notifications only to apps on the Home Screen, from iOS 16.4. In Safari, kanman shows how to get there instead of a button:

  1. Tap Share in Safari, then Add to Home Screen. See Install kanman on your phone.
  2. Open kanman from your Home Screen.
  3. Turn notifications on there, from the card in the conversation or under Your settings > Notifications.

Android and desktop

Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Android and on the desktop show notifications from the browser and from the installed app.

If you blocked notifications for kanman earlier, the page says so. Allow them in the settings of your browser or system, then come back and tap Turn on.

What I push

Once a device gets push notifications, the table What reaches you on the same page gets a Push column. It applies to all your devices:

Row When
A decision waits for me A question only you can answer. Requests for the stories of one outcome come as one notification, for example “Integrations dependencies: 7 need you”, and it updates instead of stacking up.
A merge request waits for your review A story is ready for review.
An incident was opened An incident opens or is resolved.
My answers and what is worth knowing My answers to your questions, and what is worth knowing (a story was delivered or got stuck).
Morning brief The morning brief, reports and team reviews. Off by default.

I ask only what I cannot find out myself, and each question once; see Questions, bundled in one place.

What you turn off here still shows in the app. Quiet hours, urgent incidents, each team’s working hours and the teams you hear from are set under the table, see Notifications: Quiet hours.

While you are in kanman

kanman does not send a notification to a device while you are using kanman on it: the conversation, the badges and the live updates already show it. Your other devices still get it. If several things happen at once, kanman sends at most a few notifications in ten minutes; whatever needs you is never dropped, it arrives a little later.

Where your device supports it (the installed app on iPhone, iPad and the desktop), the app icon shows the number of items that need you, the same as the needs you count in the app.

Turn them off

  • On one device: Your settings > Notifications > Turn off next to This device.
  • Signing out also stops notifications on that device.
  • One row: switch off its Push cell under What reaches you. A team or the workspace: Quiet hours > Advanced > From where.
