Look and feel

Theme, language, card density, installing kanman and vibration, and the comfort and accessibility settings: motion, contrast, see-through surfaces, text size and focus ring.

Look and feel changes how kanman looks and moves for you. It does not affect other members.

Opening Look and feel

  1. Click your avatar at the top right and choose Your settings.
  2. Open Look and feel (/account/look).

The page has two cards: Appearance and Comfort and accessibility. Each short choice is a row of options: click one, or move between them with the arrow keys. The line under each setting describes the option you chose. Old links to the former Preferences and Accessibility pages open this page; accessibility links open it at Comfort and accessibility.

Appearance

Theme

Option Description
System Follows the light or dark setting of your device and changes with it, for example at sunset (default)
Light Light surfaces with dark text
Dark Dark surfaces with light text

Under System the line below says which theme your device uses right now. Light and dark are designed together: every page, status and chart reads the same in both.

Language

Choose Browser language (the default: your browser’s language when kanman offers it, otherwise English), English, Deutsch, Español or Français. The language also sets the language of the links from the in-app help to this documentation.

The language of the interface does not change the language kanman writes in. Stories, plans and notes follow the language of your tracker project and requirements, so a German Jira board gets German stories.

Card density

Default keeps more space on story cards, Compact fits more stories on a team board: less padding, and titles of up to two lines. Card density is saved to your account, so it applies on every device.

Install app

Where your browser can install kanman, Install kanman in the Install app row opens it from your Home Screen or dock in its own window. On iPhone and iPad the row explains Share > Add to Home Screen instead. Once kanman is installed, or where the browser offers no install, the row is not shown. See Install kanman on your phone.

Vibration

Vibrate on confirmations gives a short vibration when kanman confirms an answer, on devices that can vibrate, never with reduced motion. It is marked This device: the choice is stored in this browser only.

Comfort and accessibility

For motion, contrast and see-through surfaces, System (the default) follows the setting of your operating system or browser, and changes with it while kanman is open. The line below says what your device asks for right now, so you only need to change them here if you want kanman to behave differently.

Motion

kanman uses short transitions, for example when a story moves to the next column or a run advances to the next stage. Choose Reduce and these changes happen instantly: no sliding cards, no animated progress, no smooth scrolling, and kanman’s cursor no longer plays its work on the board. Full always shows the transitions.

Contrast

More makes borders, text and interactive elements more distinct: surfaces become solid instead of translucent, secondary text gets darker (or lighter in the dark theme), borders and the focus ring get stronger. It works in both themes and helps with low vision, colour vision deficiencies and bright environments. Standard is the regular look. With System, kanman switches to more contrast when your operating system asks for it (for example Increase contrast on macOS or iOS).

See-through surfaces

Fewer replaces translucent surfaces and background blur with solid colours. This improves readability, especially on team pages with a wallpaper. Standard keeps the slightly see-through look.

Text size

Setting Effect
Standard Default size
Larger Slightly larger text
Largest Clearly larger text

Text size affects navigation, buttons, labels, story cards, the run page and kanman’s questions. For larger changes, combine it with your browser zoom.

Focus

Default Standard focus outline
Strong Thicker, high-contrast focus outline

Saving and syncing

Each choice is saved the moment you click it and takes effect at once; a short Saved appears next to the setting, and Undo in the message at the bottom takes it back. If a choice can’t be saved, the setting says so with Try again. Everything except vibration follows your account to every browser and device.
